THE EARTH WILL COME
2017, Dance Film (3:53 minutes)
Direction, Cinematography and Editing: Katelyn Stiles
Dance: Kira Kirsch
Music: Barnaby Tree, produced by Pebble Music
The Earth Will Come is a short dance film that questions the romanticization of nature amidst environmental crisis and colonial exploitation. This work is in conversation with the cliché of dance films set in nature and was filmed during the height of the Indigenous led Standing Rock protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline. The work explores inner conflicts with a critical and satyrical lens. The Earth Will Come applied improvisation techniques in all stages of production and was filmed with movement artist and close collaborator Kira Kirsch, in a forest in the outskirts of Berlin where she used to play as a child. This dance film was selected and screened at several film festivals worldwide including San Francisco Dance Film Festival, Dance Camera West (Los Angeles), Movimiento en Movimiento (Mexico City), Cinedans Amsterdam, and Riff Film Festival (Norway).
